Fremantle Print Prize 2019

ARTIST STATEMENT

Valley 1 was developed from drawings made in the Blue Mountains based on physical features – plateau, cliff and valley. The creation of a path moving through various scapes, both internal and external, was the concept for making this image. It is an expression of forging connections with place and nature, and mapping a journey of assimilation through space and time.

Twelve blocks of plywood were carved and printed onto six sheets of Thai hand made paper. Blocks were printed intuitively, colours respond to atmosphere of place, and inking and printing methods embrace variations of the printed mark. Wood was used as a print medium for its natural qualities. The final image is a unique state print.
